Like the woven patterns of the tapestries that soften the walls, Georgetown University Hospital’s Betty Lou Ourisman Breast Health Center blends technology with caring, quality with warmth, and expertise with concern to achieve a unique balance. It offers women the most advanced breast care in a graceful atmosphere of comfort and support. The center houses radiologists, oncologists, surgeons and nurse practitioners dedicated solely to breast health.
First to Offer Digital Mammography and High-Resolution Ultrasound In support of our commitment to provide the best care available, the Betty Lou Ourisman Breast Health Center offers two advanced diagnostic tools: digital mammography and high-resolution ultrasound. Digital mammograms may be more effective for women with dense or fibrous breast tissue. The new system also produces images of the breast on a computer rather than on X-ray film, eliminating the wait for films to be developed. Doctors can adjust the contrast of the image on the computer screen to ensure clearer, more accurate images, thus reducing the number of callbacks for additional films. The high-resolution ultrasound unit, the only one of its kind in the Washington region, also provides clearer images that help physicians more accurately identify the consistency of cysts, and the sizes and area of tumors. In addition to our digital mammography and high-resolution ultrasound, patients have access to highly innovative advanced technology such as breast MRI, PET scanning and ductal lavage. These technologies put the Ourisman Center on the forefront of breast care’s diagnostic frontier.
