The General Surgery section of the Divison of Surgery at Georgetown University Hospital offers consultative, diagnostic, and therapeutic services to both outpatients and inpatients for all surgical disorders of the esophagus, gastrointestinal tract, colon and rectal tract, liver, pancreas, and breast and endocrine glands.
Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery is now available for a variety of benign and malignant diseases of the colon and rectum (large intestine) in selected patients. The New England Journal of Medicine published an article by Dr. Heidi Nelson in 2004 about the results of long-term follow up of patients who had undergone laparoscopic surgery for colon cancer. These patients showed no difference in long-term survival compared to open operations and yet patients had smaller and more cosmetic incisions, lower wound complications, used less narcotics for pain control, had earlier ambulation, earlier ability to intake food, earlier discharge from the hospital, earlier bowel function and earlier return to work.
