Educational Philosophy

The most important objective of the Georgetown University/Providence Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program is to provide our graduates with the experience and skills necessary to provide their patients the highest possible standard of family medical care. This care is comprehensive, continuous, and humanistic, and is provided within the context of the patient's family and community.

In addition to increasing their biomedical knowledge, our residents gain skills in interviewing, understanding family dynamics, and mastering the social and psychological aspects of medical care. Preventive medicine is stressed, as is knowledge of the community, its health resources, and ethical issues underlying patient care.

The program benefits from a diverse patient population which spans the ages from newborn to the elderly and includes a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. The program has a strong and longstanding commitment to medically underserved groups. Participation of our practice in Medicare, Medicaid, and multiple employer-sponsored HMOs and PPOs provides an environment which prepares the resident for practice in virtually any Family Medicine setting.
