General nursing orientation (GNO) runs for two days. The objectives of the orientation are:
- The nurse will be able to identify three resources he/she can consult on for patients
- The nurse will be able to identify two reasons why we are a Magnet nursing facility.

The culture of nursing at MedStar Georgetown will be introduced through many speakers which include:
- Dr. Maureen McLaughlin, PhD, RN – Director of Nursing Research and Professional Development
- Mary Ann Lyon, RN, MSN – Assistant Dean for Enrollment Management at Georgetown University
After the conclusion of GNO, nurses will meet with their clinical educator and clinical manager to develop a custom orientation that is based on a needs assessment. If additional classes are needed for the new MedStar Georgetown Nurse, educational offering are available through the Department of Nursing Education.
It is our belief at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital that nurses come with a variety of experiences, skills, education and backgrounds. Nurses are adult learners and therefore are active participants in their learning and partners in the process. It is the expectation that new nurses will be accountable to identify learning needs and seek out guidance to meet those needs.
