Transplant Specialty Unit

This unit cares for some of MedStar Georgetown's most complex patients. The nurses of 6 Bles plan and implement care for those patients who are awaiting or have undergone renal/pancreatic/liver or small bowel transplants. Additional patients include those who are pre- and post-major abdominal surgery under the care of the transplant service. Nurses often say that each patient is really three patients in one: 1) a patient with serious underlying and chronic medical problems; 2) a patient recovering from a major surgical intervention; and 3) a patient extremely vulnerable to organ rejection who is immuno-suppressed. Nurses come to 6 Bles because of the fast pace and detailed nature of the work. It is an outstanding practice site to develop and hone surgical nursing expertise in a nurse-supportive environment.
