Percutaneous Image Guided Biospsy

Percutaneous imaged guided biopsy is a medical procedure performed to identify the cause of a lump or mass, or other abnormal condition in the body. During the procedure, the interventional radiologist inserts a small needle, guided by X-ray, Ultrasound, CT scan or other imaging techniques, into the abnormal area. A sample of tissue is removed and given to a pathologist who examines it under a microscope to determine what the abnormality is, cancer, a noncancerous tumor, infection, or scar.  The interventional radiologists at Georgetown University Hospital perform hundreds of percutaneous image guided biopsies every year.  Prior to your procedure, an office visit will be scheduled for a brief physical exam, review of relevant imaging, necessary blood work, and biopsy options available to you as a patient.  Biopsy results are usually available three days to one week after your procedure and will be reviewed with your referring doctor.

To schedule with an interventional radiologist, please call 202-444-5478.
