Gastrostomy and Gastrojejunostomy Tubes

A gastrostomy tube is a tube that is inserted through the abdomen and terminates in the stomach. It is typically used to feed patients who are unable to meet their nutritional requirements by eating (e.g. head and neck cancer patients who may have difficulty eating, or neurologically impaired patients who can not eat). A gastrojejunostomy tube is similar to a gastrostomy tube in that it is inserted through the abdomen and enters the stomach; however, the tube terminates in the small bowel.  Gastrojejunostomy tubes are typically used in patients who do not tolerate direct feeding of the stomach (e.g. patients with gastroesophageal reflux or patients with gastric obstruction).  Both gastrostomy tubes and gastrojejunostomy tubes are placed by the interventional radiology division at Georgetown University Hospital.
