Application Process

Georgetown sponsors the following residency programs in Categorical General Surgery training:

  • Categorical (5 years)
  • Designated Preliminary Year (1 year)

The Department of Surgery at Georgetown no longer accepts Non-Designated Preliminary Positions.

Note: All qualified applicants are considered for interviews. However, the volume of applicants precludes us from offering interviews to all qualified candidates.

Candidates for the General Surgery Training Program must apply through ERAS, the Electronic Residency Application Service. We request the following documents:

  • ERAS common application form
  • USMLE Step 1 transcript (and Step 2 when available)
  • Medical school transcript
  • Personal Statement
  • Dean's Letter
  • 3 letters of recommendation, including one Departmental support letter ("Chair's letter")

Applicants should deliver their ERAS diskette to their student affairs, academic affairs, or other designated dean's office. Osteopathic applicants should apply through their medical schools. Graduates of foreign medical schools should forward their diskettes and supporting documentation through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). Canadian Applicants should forward ERAS application materials to the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS). The following information provided by the ERAS Resource Center will also be helpful:

  • All U.S. Medical Schools have Dean's Office workstations.
  • Students and graduates of foreign medical schools should apply through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) via mail, facsimilie, or email.

  • The deadline for all ERAS application submissions for the 2008 academic year will be November 1, 2009.   Please note that the Selection Committee is aware that the Deans' Letters are not sent out until November 1. Your application will still be reviewed.

Interviews
Candidates who have been selected to interview will be notified via email correspondence. All candidates are interviewed in person during the months of November, December and January. During the interview day, each candidate will have the opportunity to interview with two members of the faculty as well as the Chairman and Program Director.

The interview day provides not only an opportunity for our faculty to meet the applicants, but also provides a venue for applicants to gain information about our program. We, therefore, provide opportunities throughout the interview day for the applicants to speak to current residents and view our facilities in a tour.

The night before each interview, we host a Meet the Residents party at a local restaurant. Attendance is not mandatory, but it is a lot of fun and we love to entertain all of the candidates with this kind of event.

Please be aware, all correspondence will be done through email. The ERAS application system makes communicating easy and with email, we can send a message immediately, instead of waiting for a response within a few days.  Therefore, you will not receive a written letter through US mail when invited for an interview. We send invitations via email and then save them for reference and verification. This keeps our ability to track responses and sent items more efficiently.
