Intensive Care Nursery

Provides antenatal consultation, comprehensive delivery room care, state-of-the-art management of critically ill neonates, infant transport services, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and high-frequency jet ventilation. Available facilities for parents of infants in the NICU include Mother’s Haven for breast-feeding moms, Parents Lounge with extensive educational material and Dad’s Nest specifically for fathers.

Developmental Evaluation Clinic

Provides follow up for children at risk for later developmental problems, and allows early identification of potential handicaps in infants and babies at risk for developmental delays. The evaluation team includes developmental pediatricians, physical therapists and psychologists.

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (EC MO)

Provides long-term extracorporeal life support for critically ill infants unresponsive to conventional treatment.

High-Frequency Ventilation

High-frequency jet ventilators and oscillators are available to treat term or premature infants who have severe respiratory failure with or without air leak.

Lactation Center

Provides counseling, education and research in breast-feeding. International board certified lactation consultant (IBLC) staff provide full lactation support services 7 days a week. Inpatient consults and visits available anytime for new moms who are still in the hospital with their newborns. Other new moms can schedule outpatient visits.

Neonatal Extended Outpatient (NEO) Clinic

Continuing comprehensive postdischarge management for NICU graduates and infants who have apnea, BPD and other continuing medical needs. Coordinates inpatient and outpatient evaluation and follow up of technology-dependent infants.

Neonatal Transport Service

Provides a specially trained team to move critically ill newborns and infants to and from MedStar Georgetown University Hospital via ambulance or helicopter 24 hours a day. Infants can be transported even while on high-frequency ventilation and inhaled nitrous oxide (iNO) therapy.

Transitional Neonatal Neurodevelopmental
Services (TNNDS )

TNNDS provides developmental assessments of high-risk babies between 6 and 8 weeks of age following their discharge from the nursery. Such services will allow for transitional neurodevelopmental monitoring before these babies are seen by a multidisciplinary team at approximately 6 months of age. The assessment consists of an age-appropriate neurodevelopmental evaluation (a modified Brazelton test) and recommendations to the family.
