The MedStar Georgetown University Hospital has expert adolescent medicine physicians who offer specialized, routine and acute medical care to adolescents ages 12 through 22 years—all within a trusting and compassionate environment.
Our History
The MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's Adolescent Medicine practice is designed to provide a welcoming ambience, a respect for both the autonomy of young patients and the concerns of their parents/guardians, and importantly, office visits with sufficient time to talk and listen, to think and formulate a plan.
Our Philosophy
We strive to meet the distinctive challenges of adolescent and young adult healthcare and to appreciate the many joys of caring for our patients. We strive to maintain an awareness of the uniqueness of each patient and family with open minds and flexibility. We appreciate the complexity of our patients' health needs, and approach them in a comprehensive and collaborative manner. We recognize the importance of trust and respect in any successful partnership, and therefore value all opportunities for effective communication.
Our Mission
- We are a medical practice that provides the highest quality and most comprehensive primary and specialized healthcare to adolescents and young adults in a warm and trusting environment.
- We respect our patients' privacy and autonomy at all times, while we recognize that the context of their lives includes family, peers, school and work. In caring for our patients, we strive to address their physical, developmental and psychosocial health needs.
- We endeavor to promote the health and wellbeing of young people through educational outreach to the community, including families, schools and other health professionals.
-
Our approach to patients and their families fosters a gradual shift of responsibility for a young person's health from parents to self. We strive to engender openness and to preserve confidentiality.
Primary Care
The scope of Adolescent-Young Adult Medicine ranges from primary care for those in good health to specialized care for patients with serious or complex health needs. Primary care addresses the healthcare needs of all adolescents and young adults, including those who also have specialized needs. In fact, most of our patients are in good health and utilize our practice principally for primary care.
