Sleep Disorders Center

About our Center

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s Sleep Disorders Center has been continuously accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine since 1985. A multidisciplinary team of sleep specialists from the Divisions of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Neurology offers a broad range of testing and equipment.

Other members of our team include specialists in Otolaryngology, Psychiatry, Clinical Psychology and Pediatrics. Board-certified sleep specialists staff our six-bed center and registered Polysomnographic Technologists especially trained to deal with the full gamut of sleep disorders 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

State-of-the-art technology for sleep monitoring

Our center is equipped with state of the art digital diagnostic technology to measure and accurately record various aspects of human physiology during sleep. We designed the rooms to simulate a “home-like” environment. Each private room has a comfortable full sized bed with a television and adjacent bathroom and shower.

What to Expect During Your Sleep Study

  1. On the night of the study, a Sleep Technologist will thoroughly explain the procedure.
  2. We show a video on the procedure and various treatment options available for those patients suspected to have sleep apnea.
  3. Once you have changed into bedclothes, we place small sensors on various parts of the body to monitor brain wave activity, eye and muscle movements.
  4. We will measure oxygen saturation, carbon dioxide levels and respiratory and heart rates. These sensors are painless and do not interfere with the ability to sleep.

How to Schedule a Sleep Study

Patients of MedStar Georgetown's Sleep Disorders Center are referred, either by their Primary Care Physician, or by one of the center's physicians specializing in sleep medicine.

After an initial interview and evaluation, a Sleep Specialist may schedule the patient for a polysomnogram (overnight sleep study), depending on the patient's symptoms, medical history, and sleep history.
