Message from CNO
and Senior VP of Operations
Joyce Johnson,
RN, PhD, FAAN, NEA-BC

When I first walked into Georgetown I knew that there was something special about the organization.  It did not take me long to realize the part played by the nurses.  The Division of Nursing (DON) was committed to providing excellence in patient care in an environment of interdisciplinary respect, caring – for each other as well as the patients, and continual evidence-based innovation.  The nurses and managers, I was quick to realize, had already begun the arduous journey toward becoming Magnet Nurses.  Their daily nursing care was phenomenal, as validated by objective outcomes and the wonderful letters from grateful patients.  When I commented on this, most would say “it’s just part of my job.”

I set a strategic goal of formally attaining Magnet Recognition, an award given by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) for excellence in nursing care.  Attaining Magnet is never easy, however, the basics already ingrained in our culture.  In 2004, we achieved the goal- we became, and still are, the first and only Magnet Hospital in D.C., recognizing the institution’s admiration and respect for our nurses, our scholarly approach to continually improving practice, and the exceptional care that we give everyday.  We continue to maintain the environment created by combining the Georgetown culture with the Magnet spirit.  I believe Georgetown nursing is unsurpassed in enhancing and supporting excellence in nursing practice and the best possible patient care.

For those who work at GUH, thank you for the wonderful things you do internally, as well as in the community; these efforts are what make us Magnet Nurses.  If you are thinking of joining our DON, we welcome you to our culture of excellence and challenge you to become a Magnet Nurse- one who goes above and beyond everyday.  We look forward to working with you in an internationally-respected organization that is equally recognized for both its excellent medical staff – and its nurses.
