Fellowships Program Description

Georgetown University Hospital is committed to patient and family centered care and encourages open communication, innovation and creativity. The team of nurses, physicians, and other health care providers are dedicated to providing excellence in patient care, education and research.

The Department of Nursing is offering fellowships for nurses pursuing professional growth. During a fellowship, nurses will enhance their expertise in caring for specific populations of patients. Fellowships are available in the following clinical settings: Critical Care, Emergency Department, Bone Marrow Transplant/Oncology, Neonatal Intensive Care, Labor and Delivery, Operating Room, General Medicine/Surgery, and Pediatrics/Pediatric Intensive Care.

The fellowship program provides opportunities to increase knowledge in a specific area and enrich the utilization of the nursing process in caring for acutely ill patients. Experiences from many aspects across the continuum of care are included in the fellowship. These aspects may include case management, out patient clinics, and other relevant services. The program highlights advanced practice and technology, research, health care issues, ethics, and professional development.

This year-long program consists of classroom and clinical experiences utilizing an interdisciplinary team approach to patient care. In the beginning, the nurse will precept with an experienced staff member until the knowledge and clinical skills are attained for independent practice. The fellow then continues to receive individual support from a mentor.

Program Objectives

Upon completion of the fellowship, the nurse will be able to:

  • Integrate advanced physiological and clinical management concepts into the care of acutely ill patients in the selected area.
  • Analyze recent technological advances and their implications for nursing practice in the selected area.
  • Interpret the implications of health care issues that affect patients and professional practice.
  • Implement ethical principles in the care of complex acutely ill patients.
